Gerakan Plastik Akal Sehat untuk Indonesia (PASTI) held the Green Initiative Award 2020 to recognize organizations that have embraced greater waste awareness and more responsible plastic use. The event also supports the government's broader push to reduce plastic waste and build a healthier, greener Indonesia.
The award was designed to highlight companies that have genuinely committed to environmentally friendly practices. Many businesses have already begun shifting toward more sustainable products, yet few have been willing to publicly showcase that transformation. This event served as a benchmark — a way to gauge how many companies have responded to the call to adopt eco-friendly plastic, and how deeply that shift has taken root in their culture and business management.
Thirteen companies and organizations from across Indonesia took part in the Green Initiative Award 2020, each demonstrating real progress toward more environmentally responsible operations. The winners are meant to serve as proof that meaningful change is both possible and already happening — that businesses can care about environmental sustainability and act on it. Organizations that have transformed their products and plastic waste management are expected, in turn, to inspire the broader public to do the same.

"If this company managed to change, why can't others? We hope to keep driving change and educating the public, not to attack one another, but to shift behavior toward choosing plastic more wisely." — Naning, Chair of Gerakan PASTI
Beyond change at the corporate and public level, the organization also hopes to see the government step in with consistent national and regional regulations. A shared understanding of what counts as "environmentally friendly" will be essential in determining which plastic products the public should be encouraged to buy, particularly those that break down quickly in nature.
"We can't simply tell the public to buy expensive products when people in certain regions genuinely can't afford them. We can't only look at what works in big cities." — Naning
The judging panel, comprising Noer Adi Wardojo (Ministry of Environment and Forestry), Tulus Abadi (YLKI, the Indonesian Consumers Foundation), and Puput TD Putra (KPPL-I), selected first-place winners recognized for their contribution to a healthier, greener Indonesia.

Judging took place on February 17, 2020. The award criteria included the use of environmentally friendly products and a demonstrated shift from conventional plastic toward more sustainable alternatives. Several companies showed clear improvement — from adopting more eco-friendly plastic in production to overhauling company management and waste processing systems no longer harmful to the environment.
The event also featured a talk show with young activists from the millennial generation, most of whom are actively engaged in tackling plastic waste issues — a generation that clearly wants to see its surroundings free of plastic waste.
The event was organized by Gerakan PASTI in collaboration with INIAS Resource Center, GPCI (Green Product Council Indonesia), JPIP (Jaringan Pemerhati Industri dan Perdagangan), YPBI (Yayasan Peduli Bumi Indonesia), and KPPLI (Koalisi Pemantau Plastik Ramah Lingkungan Indonesia).
